Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Rehearsing what we want to write aloud helps us to hold the information in our head.
  2. Instructions start with a title, such as ‘How to make a sandwich’.
  3. Instructions often include a list of what you will need, in this case, ingredients.
  4. A list might be put into a sentence or written as listed objects on separate lines.

Keywords

  • Instruction - tells us how something should be done

  • Title - the name or heading of a piece of writing

  • List - a group of single things that are put together

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to sequence their sequencing language.

Either provide a word bank of sequencing words 'First,', 'Then,' etc. or encourage children who struggle with this to only sequence using numbers.
