## Lesson details

### Key learning points

1. The letters i and u are x-height letters
2. The letters l and t have an ascender
3. The letters y and j have a desecender
4. The letters i, l, t and u finish with a flick on the baseline
5. The letters y and j finish with a curl up on the descender line

### Common misconception

There may be confusion on the direction for the 'curl up' on the y and j.

Be consistent with wording and modelling. Left direction is 'curl up' whereas 'flick' is when the direction is to the right.

### Keywords

• X-height letter - letters that sit between the baseline and the x-height line

• Ascender - the part of a letter that extends above the x-height line

• Descender - the part of a letter that descends below the baseline

Use consistent actions to support children's understanding and recall of key words. For example reaching up for ascenders and reaching down for descenders.
