Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can engage with the information of a non-fiction text.

Key learning points

  1. ‘Crazy About Cats’ provides information about different species of cats which can be compared and contrasted.
  2. Non-fiction can develop curiosity by engaging readers' interests and encouraging a deeper exploration of topics.
  3. Readers can ask questions of the text and illustrations to engage more fully with the information they have read.

Keywords

  • Characteristic - A characteristic is a trait or quality that distinguishes something or someone.

  • Similarity - A similarity is when two or more things share similar traits.

  • Difference - A difference is when two or more things have features that set them apart from one another.

  • Curiosity - Curiosity is the strong desire to know, explore, and learn about the world around you

Common misconception

Pupils may restrict their questioning in Task B solely to what is explained in the text.

Encourage readers to interrogate the illustrations, as well as reflect on their own personal responses, to further develop questioning.

Teacher tip

It can be helpful to have some copies of pages for pupils to text mark. Questions can be labelled around the page, or post-it notes can be used to annotate.

Equipment
