Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on learning from the Year 5 grammar unit 'Key grammar terminology, including determiners and fronted adverbials', where all four determiners were taught and fronted adverbial single words, phrases and clauses were reviewed in detail. New learning in this unit includes learning that adverbs can describe verbs, denote time frames and describe adjectives. This unit prepares pupils for writing for a range of purposes, including across a range of fiction genres and in analytical writing, because it broadens pupils' skills for writing cohesively for any writing purpose.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • There are different word classes in English that are used to form sentences.
  • Adjectives are words that describe nouns and adverbs are words that can describe verbs.
  • A determiner introduces a noun in a clause.
  • Determiners can be articles, possessive pronouns, quantifiers or demonstratives.
  • A fronted adverbial can be a single word, phrase or clause and is followed by a comma.
  • A clause is a group of words that contains a verb.
  • A phrase is a group of words that does not contain a verb.
  • A fronted adverbial can express detail about time, place or manner.
  • Parenthesis is additional information in a clause that can be removed without compromising grammatical accuracy.
  • Parenthesis can be achieved with a pair of brackets, dashes or commas.
