Why this why now

This unit uses and builds on puils' understanding of 'Animal Farm' from the second deep dive, 'the pigs and propaganda'. In this unit, pupils look in more depth at how language is used to create oppression, but they also start to think about how the other animals could be responsible for their own oppression through their apathy. This unit draws together all of pupils' knowledge of 'Animal Farm' from the previous units, and gives them the opportunity to develop richer, more nuanced and more cohesive interepreations of the novella.

‘Animal Farm’: language manipulation and control

In this unit, pupils explore how language is used for control in 'Animal Farm'. They first look at the pigs' control of language, before exploring how the other animals' apathetic language contributes to their oppression. Pupils finally plan and write an essay about language manipulation.
