      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain how Hardi presents the impact of displacement in ‘My Mother’s Kitchen’.

      Key learning points

      1. In the poem Hardi speaks of her mother's possessions, the ones she has collected (and lost) fleeing war.
      2. Hardi's poem addresses belonging through the eyes of a refugee, forced to move many times for safety.
      3. Arguably, the poem implies the displacement means refugees never have a chance to belong anywhere.

      Keywords

      • Displacement - the action of moving something from its place or position

      • Metaphorical - representing some truth about a situation or other subject; not literal

      • Refugee - a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster

      • Belonging - a feeling of being happy or comfortable as part of a particular group

      • Sustenance - the maintaining of someone or something in life or existence

      Common misconception

That a home is just a set of bricks and mortar.

A home offers us a place of refuge and safety - without a home we feel lost and unsure.

      Teacher tip

It would be useful for pupils to share their ideas surrounding the impact of displacement so they can understand how it relates to ideas of belonging.
