Key learning points
- In French the letter 'c' is naturally soft before the letters 'e' or 'i' and hard before the letters 'a', 'o' or 'u'.
- The SSC [ç/c] is pronounced as in 'centre' and 'français'. The cedilla 'ç' softens the hard 'c' before 'a', 'o' or 'u'.
- The verb 'faire' means both 'to do' and 'to make'.
- I do, make is 'je fais', you do, make is 'tu fais', 'he does, makes is 'il fait' and 'she does, makes' is 'elle fait'.
- 'Faire' can be used with a range of nouns to express different activities e.g. 'faire la cuisine' (to do the cooking).
Keywords
Faire - French verb meaning 'to do, doing' and 'to make, making'
Tu fais - French verb meaning 'you do, are doing' or 'you make, are making'
Common misconception
The letter 'c' is always soft (like the 's' in English) in French.
The letter 'c' is naturally soft before 'e' and 'i' e.g. 'c'est', but hard before 'a', 'o' and 'u' e.g. 'carte'. The cedilla 'ç' is used to soften it before 'a', 'o' and 'u'. For example: 'français'.
