Key learning points

  1. The SSC [s] sounds like 'z' in English. It is a 'hard' sound when it is between two vowels, including in a liaison.
  2. It is 'soft' when at the beginning of a word/syllable, before/after a consonant and where there is a double [ss].
  3. We use 'mon' to mean 'my' for masculine nouns and 'ma' for feminine nouns: 'mon chien' (my dog), 'ma sœur' (my sister).
  4. We also use 'mon' (my) or 'ton' (your) for nouns beginning with a vowel or a silent 'h': 'mon amie' (my female friend).
  5. For plural nouns, use 'mes' for 'my' and 'tes' for 'your': 'mes parents' (my parents) 'tes amis' (your friends).

Keywords

  • Mes - possessive pronoun 'my' for plural nouns

  • Tes - possessive pronoun 'your' for plural nouns

Common misconception

The SSC [s] always sounds like the English 'z'.

The SSC [s] sounds 'hard' (like the English 'z') when it is between two vowels. It sounds 'soft' at the beginning of a word/syllable, before or after a consonant and when there is a double [ss].

Teacher tip

A common difficultly amongst pupils is understanding that in French the possessive pronoun matches the 'possessed' object, not the person who 'possesses' it. In English we don't have a separate possessive pronoun for plural nouns. It's important to point out this difference.
