Key learning points

  1. [tion] is pronounced as in 'attention'. [on] is pronounced as in 'non'.
  2. The Concorde was a project between France and the UK after the 2nd world war to build supersonic planes.
  3. Prepositions of place tell us where things are in relation to other things. Some like 'loin' need 'de' before the noun.
  4. Say French years the same as normal numbers, not split like in English. There is no –s after mille/cent in years.
  5. Prepositions of movement are used to translate ‘to’ and ‘from’; 'à' and 'de' can change before the definite article.

Keywords

  • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

Common misconception

Words with [tion] are cognates, therefore pronounced the same in English and French.

Although [tion] words are usually cognates, the sound is different and useful to revisit regularly.
