Key learning points
- The letters 'd', 's', 't' and 'x' are usually silent at the end of words in French.
- The plural forms of être are 'nous sommes', (we are) 'vous êtes' (you are) and 'ils/elles' sont (they are).
- The most common adjective agreement pattern for plural adjectives is the addition of -s.
- Adjectives already ending -s/-x don't change + masculine plural adjectives ending -al change to aux in the plural form.
Keywords
Silent final consonant (SFC) - silent letter (d, s, t, x) at the end of a word
Être - to be, being
Adjective agreement - when the ending of an adjective matches the noun it describes in gender and number
Common misconception
Add -s to make all adjectives plural.
Regular adjectives usually need -s adding in the plural form, however there are other patterns and differences between the masculine and the feminine form with adjectives ending in -x and -al.
