Key learning points

  1. Most final consonants + final letter 'e' are silent e.g. 'dans' and 'timide'. Pronounce the consonant preceding a SFC.
  2. Adjectives agree with the noun they describe. Add -e to most adjectives in the feminine form and learn other patterns.
  3. The singular pronouns in French are 'je', 'tu', and 'il/elle'. The irregular verb 'être' means to be'.
  4. Put ne … pas around the verb to negate it. 'Ne' becomes 'n' before a vowel/silent h.
  5. Languages are not fixed; they adopt new words to reflect how people live and speak.

Keywords

  • Silent final -e - silent letter (e) at the end of a word

  • Adjective agreement - when the ending of an adjective matches the noun it describes in gender and number

Common misconception

Languages don't change; they have a fixed number of words in them.

Languages are not fixed; they are changing all the time, adopting new words to reflect how people live and speak.
