Key learning points

  1. Vowel sounds in French can be open or closed.
  2. The SSC [eu] can be closed, like in 'peu'. Your tongue should be near the top of your mouth.
  3. The SSC [eu] can be open, like in 'peur'. Your tongue should be near the bottom of your mouth.
  4. Words ending in -eur often end in -or or -our in English.
  5. To say 'your' when talking to someone formally or to more than one person, use: 'votre' (m/f) and 'vos' (mpl/fpl).

Common misconception

There is one way of saying 'your' in French.

'Your' in French changes, depending on who you are talking to and what you are talking about. Use 'ton' (m), 'ta' (f) or 'tes' (pl) when talking to someone you know well. Use 'votre' (m/f) or 'vos' (mpl/fpl) when talking to someone formally.
