New daily routines: reflexive pronoun 'se'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use a range of vocabulary, direct object pronouns and reflexive pronouns in the singular form to describe daily life for refugees in France.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. [closed o/o] is pronounced as in 'photo', [au] is pronounced as in 'gauche' and [open o] is pronounced as in 'porte'.
      2. Use the direct object pronouns 'le' and 'la' to mean 'him'/'her' and 'it'. Shorten to l' before a vowel/silent 'h'.
      3. The reflexive pronoun meaning 'himself'/'herself' is 'se', placed before the verb and shortened to s' before a vowel.
      4. Some verbs use reflexive pronouns in French, but we don’t always translate the reflexive pronoun in English.

      Keywords

      • Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb e.g. me, you, it, him, her

      • Reflexive pronoun - used to indicate doing something to yourself, words like ‘myself’ and ‘yourself’

      Common misconception

Translate reflexive verbs literally into English with the reflexive pronoun.

Some verbs use reflexive pronouns in French, but we don’t always translate the reflexive pronoun in English e.g. 'Je me sens' meaning 'I feel'.

      Teacher tip

If pupils are using the worksheet, they can sit back to back for the C3 speaking task. The refugee topic may be a sensitive subject for some students so it's worth reading through the full lesson to flag any particularly sensitive slides.
