Key learning points
- Nasal vowel sounds occur when one or more vowels precede a nasal consonant e.g. an, un, ain, on, en.
- When a nasal sound such as [an] is followed by a vowel, it is no longer a nasal sound e.g. aucune.
- 'ne ...aucun' is a negative structure meaning 'not any' or 'no' before a singular noun.
- 'aucun/aucune' must agree in gender with the noun it refers to.
Keywords
Ne ... aucun/e - no, not one, not any
Common misconception
Use 'ne ... pas' to mean 'no, not one, not any'.
The structure 'ne ... pas' is used to negative a verb. To say that there was 'no, not one, not any' of a noun, use the structure 'ne ... aucun/e' e.g. il n'y a aucun fruit ici.
