Key learning points

  1. Use the present to describe what you see on a photo, but use the future and conditional to develop the conversation.
  2. Use time markers and other similarly useful structures to help organise longer responses using different tenses.
  3. Include regular and common irregular future and conditional verbs when writing about future plans.

Keywords

  • Conditional - form of verb used to express what would happen

  • PALM - acronym used for photo descriptions

  • BORDER - acronym used for extended writing

Common misconception

Only the present tense is required when performing the photo description task.

The present tense will mostly be used to describe a photo; however, other tenses are required for the follow-up questions based on the topic of the photo. Students should be able to use future and conditional verbs to discuss future plans.
