      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can compare different places to live and use 'si' with the imperfect and conditional to express where I and others would ideally like to live.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The conditional can be used to say what someone would do or what would happen.
      2. The conditional endings are: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. These are the same as the imperfect.
      3. The conditional is used in sentences with 'si' (if) and the imperfect to say what we would do if things were different.

      Keywords

      • Conditional - a form of verb used to express what would happen

      • Si + imperfect - a structure used to express a condition, translated as 'if' + past tense

      Common misconception

Use the present tense after 'si' and before the conditional to say what you would do.

French uses the combination of 'si' + imperfect + conditional to express what would happen if a certain condition occurred e.g. If I won the lottery, I would move to France.

      Teacher tip

If time permits, the final speaking activity makes for a fun whole class game in which students can challenge each other to build upon each sentence. Other nominated students could perhaps translate student responses into English and points be awarded for use of language, originality etc.

      Equipment

Mini whiteboards and pens are useful, if available.
