Key learning points

  1. Verbs which express a change of state, place or condition often use être as the auxiliary verb in the perfect tense.
  2. Past participles used with être must agree in gender and number with the subject of the verb.
  3. Tenses can be usefully combined to write/talk about people's past and current daily lives, achievements and events.

Keywords

  • Past participle - verb form that forms the perfect tense, together with the auxiliary verb

Common misconception

It is acceptable to only give short answers in the conversation element of the speaking exam.

Students should focus on giving answers in conversation that include at least three verb clauses. They should also regularly practise developing their answers with different verb tenses, subjects, opinions and reasons.
