Key learning points
- 'Après avoir' is used with a past participle to translate the English 'after doing' something.
- If the verb takes 'être' in the perfect tense, use 'après être' instead of 'après avoir'.
- When the verb used takes 'être' in the perfect tense, the past participle must agree with the subject of the sentence.
- Reflexive verbs place the reflexive pronoun in front of 'être'.
Keywords
Past participle - verb form that forms the perfect tense, together with the auxiliary verb
Common misconception
The 'après avoir' + past participle structure applies to all verbs.
Verbs which take 'être' in the perfect tense use the structure 'après être' + past participle. The past participle must agree with the subject of the sentence e.g. Après être arrivée, elle a fait ses devoirs.
