      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can locate the Lake District and identify its key human and physical features using geographical language and maps.

      Key learning points

      1. The Lake District is a region of mountains and lakes in the north west of England and most of it is a National Park.
      2. The Park has all the land in England above 910 metres including the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike.
      3. Wast Water, the deepest lake in England, and Windermere, the longest lake in England, are found here.

      Keywords

      • World Heritage Site - World Heritage Sites are places on Earth that are of outstanding universal value to humanity and are listed to be protected for future generations to enjoy

      • National Park - A National Park is a large area of land protected by law to keep the natural environment safe.

      • Lake - A lake is a large area of water surrounded by land

      • Region - A region is a part of a country or the world

      • Mountain - A mountain is a natural raised part of Earth’s surface that is higher than a hill

      Common misconception

Children may think the Lake District has the highest mountains and longest/deepest lakes in the UK.

Point out that although Scafell Pike is the tallest mountain in England, it is not as tall as Ben Nevis (tallest in the UK). Similarly, although Windermere is over 10 miles long it is not longer than many Scottish lochs.

      Teacher tip

If you have time, you could let the children explore the locations mentioned in the lesson using Google Street View or the geograph image search on Digimaps. This would be especially useful if they have never visited before.
