Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Most people live near rivers or coasts.
  2. Some countries have high birth rates and growth.
  3. Cities are expanding due to urban migration.
  4. Population growth puts pressure on resources.

Keywords

  • Population density - the number of people living in a defined area, e.g. 300 people per km2

  • Distribution - the way something is spread out

  • Migration - moving from one place to another with the intention of staying there

  • Natural increase - when birth rates are higher than death rates

Common misconception

Everyone in the Middle East lives in the desert.

Although deserts cover a vast amount of land, people tend to cluster around water sources like rivers and coasts. That’s why cities like Cairo (near the Nile) are densely populated.
