Pupils need to apply geographical skills throughout the course and this unit can be dipped into at any stage and as many times as necessary. This unit works well in association with the previous fieldwork unit as this is the most concentrated area of skills application in the GCSE course. In subsequent units, pupils can continue to practice their geographical skills.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils understand scale and direction on different maps
  • Pupils have experience of using atlas maps
  • Pupils have some experience of using OS maps at 1:50,000 and 1:25,000
  • Pupils understand the concepts of identification, description and analysis/interpretation
  • Pupils are competent in basic numerical and statistical skills
  • Pupils are familiar with ground, aerial (vertical and oblique) and satellite photos
  • Pupils understand the principles of GIS
