      Energy consumption and supply

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain reasons for increasing energy consumption and factors that affect energy supply.

      Key learning points

      1. Energy consumption is increasing due to economic development and technology.
      2. Energy consumption is increasing due to population increase.
      3. Physical, technological, economic and political factors affect energy supply.

      Keywords

      • Economic development - the growth of a country’s wealth, leading to better jobs, higher incomes and improved living standards

      • Access - the ability to use a resource in a way that benefits people

      • Reserve - the amount of a fossil fuel that has been discovered and can be extracted and sold

      Common misconception

Rising demand for energy is simply down to the world's growing population.

This is one reason for the growing demand for energy, but economic development is another factor that affects demand. As people become richer, their consumption of energy increases, e.g. instead of using bicycles for transport, people use mopeds.

      Teacher tip

Ofgem publishes typical energy usage figures with descriptions of the user groups which can be useful for developing students' understanding of factors that increase energy consumption.
