Global patterns of energy consumption and supply

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can interpret patterns in global energy security and describe the impacts of energy insecurity on people and economies.

      Key learning points

      1. Demand for energy resources is rising globally.
      2. Globally, there are areas of surplus (security) and deficit (insecurity).
      3. Impacts of energy insecurity include exploration in sensitive areas, economic and environmental costs.

      Keywords

      • Demand - a measure of how much of something people want to buy

      • Energy security - the ability of a country to ensure a reliable, affordable and uninterrupted supply of energy to meet its needs now and in the future

      • Consumption - the amount of something that is bought and used

      • Supply - the amount of something that is available to buy

      Common misconception

Renewables make a country less energy secure because they’re unreliable.

Although supplies of energy from solar and wind can be variable, renewables diversify a country's energy supply and reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels. Overeliance on imported fossil fuels is a bigger cause of energy insecurity.
