      Strategies to increase energy supply

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can assess strategies used to increase energy supply and use an example to support my answer.

      Key learning points

      1. Different strategies can be used to increase energy supply.
      2. Strategies to increase energy supply include developing renewable and non-renewable sources of energy.
      3. The USA is developing new sources of oil and gas in Alaska, which has advantages and disadvantages.

      Keywords

      • Biomass - organic matter, from plants or animals, used as a fuel source to produce energy. A biofuel is biomass converted into a liquid or gas fuel which can be used in place of oil and natural gas

      • Hydro - the process of using moving water to generate electricity: also known as hydroelectric power (HEP)

      • Carbon emissions - the release of carbon into the atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect and global warming

      • Viable - able to generate enough money to cover its costs and remain profitable

      Common misconception

Biomass is not a renewable source of energy because carbon dioxide is released when it is burned.

Renewable energy comes from sources that don’t run out or are quickly renewed. Because plants are quickly replaced, biomass is a renewable energy source. Also, biomass is carbon neutral as CO2 released is the same CO2 absorbed during plant growth.

      Teacher tip

Understanding nuclear power and biomass is sometimes challenging for students: YouTube videos about the process of generating nuclear power (and reprocessing spent nuclear fuel), and of turning biofuels into energy sources work well in consolidating understanding here.

      Q4.
Global resource consumption is increasing mainly because …

      fewer people need resources.
      natural disasters are rising.
Correct answer: populations are growing and people are getting richer.
      oceans are shrinking.

      Q5.
Resource refers to how fairly resources are shared between people and countries.

      Correct Answer: distribution

      Bangladesh
      Correct answer: Germany
      Nepal

      5 Questions

      Q1.
Match the keywords to the correct short definitions.

Correct Answer:Biomass,Fuel from plant or animal matter

      Q2.
What makes biomass a renewable energy source?

Correct answer: It uses plants that can be grown again
      It never releases carbon
It can be used for electricity only
      It burns faster than coal

      Q3.
      Burning fossil fuels increases emissions.

      Correct Answer: carbon

      Q4.
Which is the best reason why some strategies may not be viable?

They are too easy to build
      They use no technology
Correct answer: They don't make enough profit
      They work only in cities

      Q5.
Some people say biomass isn’t renewable because it releases CO₂. What’s the better way to think about this?

It’s not safe to burn plants
CO₂ is only a problem if from oil
      All fuel types are bad
Correct answer: Plants absorb CO₂ when they grow
