      Energy futures – contrasting views

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain why different groups have contrasting views about energy futures.

      Key learning points

      1. Energy futures are different possible ways in which energy might be produced, consumed and managed in the future.
      2. Different groups have contrasting views about energy futures.

      Keywords

      • Energy futures - different scenarios about ways in which energy might be produced, consumed and managed in the future

      • Net zero - balancing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere with the amount removed from it

      Common misconception

Net zero means no greenhouse gas emissions at all.

In fact, net zero allows for greenhouse gas emissions as long as they are balanced by carbon being removed from the atmosphere.

      Teacher tip

The Royal Meteorological Society and Royal Geographical Society have produced resources based on the IPCC climate change report for 2021/22 which, though aimed at A level students, provide great resources for investigating this topic at GCSE, too.
