Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Jakarta exhibits characteristic urban forms (CBD, inner city, suburbs and rural-urban fringe).
  2. Jakarta's structure (urban form) is determined by function and buildling age.
  3. Jakarta is rapidly expanding into surrounding rural areas, changing land use dramatically.

Keywords

  • Land use - the purpose or function of land, for example: residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural or recreational use

  • Central Business District - the CBD is the commercial and business centre of a city, usually with high land values, tall buildings and a concentration of shops, offices and services

  • Rural-urban fringe - the area at the edge of a city where urban land uses (like housing or industry) meet rural land uses (like farmland or open space)

Common misconception

Jakarta’s suburbs are poor and unplanned with informal settlements.

Jakarta’s suburbs include both wealthy and mid-income areas, many of which are well-planned and developed (e.g. Pondok Indah, Kelapa Gading).
