Key learning points

  1. Word substitution when reading texts is a good way to strengthen vocabulary and grammar knowledge.
  2. Calendar years are expressed as hundreds and thousands up to year 1099 and as hundreds only from 1100 to 1999.
  3. Years from 2000 onwards are expressed as thousands.
  4. Occupations do not require an article in sentences like 'ich bin Schülerin', 'ich möchte Ärztin werden'.

Keywords

  • Article - small word that goes before a noun, e.g., a, an, the, some

Common misconception

When saying your occupation, use an indefinite article, like in English.

In German, when saying what your occupation is or what you would like to become, an indefinite article is not needed, e.g., 'Ich möchte in Zukunft Lehrer werden.' - 'In the future, I would like to become a teacher.'.
