Key learning points

  1. The difference in sound between [a] and [ä].
  2. In the present tense, the verb ending changes depending on who is doing the action.
  3. Some present tense verb stems change their vowel in the 'du, er and sie' forms, e.g., 'treffen' becomes 'du triffst'.
  4. 'Welch-' means which and is commonly used in questions. It agrees with the noun it is linked to like other adjectives.
  5. 'Gern' means 'gladly' and is used to express liking for different actions, e.g.' 'Ich spiele gern Fußball'.

Keywords

  • Present continuous - describes events happening right now: 'I am doing'

  • Simple present - describes habitual events in the present: 'I do'

  • Welch- - question word 'which'

Common misconception

All verbs only need the -en ending changed to match the subject in the present tense.

Some verbs need a change to the vowel in the stem in addition to the change to the -en ending, but only for 'du', 'er' and 'sie' (she).
