A fairy tale: present tense 2nd person plural ('ihr'), dative verbs

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can read and understand a modern fairy tale in which I can use verbs in the 2nd person plural ('ihr'), both dative and accusative verbs.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The vowels [a], [ä], [o], and [ö] need practice and clarity as an umlaut is often added to form plural nouns.
      2. 'You (plural, informal)' is 'ihr' and the verb ending is -t, e.g., 'ihr habt'. The 'ihr' form of 'sein' is 'ihr seid'.
      3. Most verbs take the accusative (direct object) case.
      4. Certain verbs take the dative (indirect object), which often has the meaning of giving something to someone.

      Keywords

      • Ihr - pronoun meaning you (all), used for more than one person that you address by their first name

      • Dative verb - verb that is used with an indirect object pronoun

      Common misconception

To say 'you' in German, we just use 'du'.

'Du' is 'you' when talking to one person you address by first name. When talking to more than one person you know this well, use 'ihr'. The verb ending is -t.

      Teacher tip

This lesson tells the beginning of a modern fairy tale, concluded in the next. Teachers might mention Germany's rich storytelling tradition – most famously the Brothers Grimm – and encourage pupils to spot traditional and modern fairy tale elements.
