Key learning points
- The vowels [a], [ä], [o], and [ö] need practice and clarity as an umlaut is often added to form plural nouns.
- 'You (plural, informal)' is 'ihr' and the verb ending is -t, e.g., 'ihr habt'. The 'ihr' form of 'sein' is 'ihr seid'.
- Most verbs take the accusative (direct object) case.
- Certain verbs take the dative (indirect object), which often has the meaning of giving something to someone.
Keywords
Ihr - pronoun meaning you (all), used for more than one person that you address by their first name
Dative verb - verb that is used with an indirect object pronoun
Common misconception
To say 'you' in German, we just use 'du'.
'Du' is 'you' when talking to one person you address by first name. When talking to more than one person you know this well, use 'ihr'. The verb ending is -t.
