Key learning points
- Regular revisiting of phonic rules supports effective transcription and reading aloud.
- Practising new and known vocabulary regularly supports successful recall.
- For 24-hour clock, we say 'Uhr' instead of ':' and minutes are said as numbers, e.g., 'vierzehn Uhr fünfunddreißig'.
- Open questions are formed by using a question word and inverting the subject and verb, e.g., 'Wann gehen wir ins Kino?'.
Keywords
Open question - question starting with a wh- word that has more information in the answer than yes/no
Common misconception
Saying times in 24-hour format in German works in exactly the same way as in English.
Saying the time in 24-hour format uses numbers like in English. The difference is that German needs 'Uhr' - 'o'clock' - between the hour and the minutes, e.g., 21:50 is 'einundzwanzig Uhr fünfzig'.
