Key learning points
- In sentences with 2 objects, if one is a pronoun, the pronoun is first, whether it is a direct or indirect pronoun.
- If both objects are nouns, the indirect object precedes the direct object.
- Use 'uns' ('to us', 'us') as both an indirect and direct object pronoun.
- Use 'euch' ('to you', 'you' - plural) as both an indirect and direct object pronoun.
Keywords
Pronoun - word that takes the place of a noun, like 'it', 'you', 'she'
Direct object - a noun in the accusative case, directly affected by the action of the verb
Indirect object - a noun in the dative case, indirectly affected by the action of the verb
Euch - pronoun meaning '(to) you' (plural)
Common misconception
The direct object precedes the indirect object in a German sentence.
If there are two objects in a sentence and one is a pronoun, the pronoun will precede the noun, regardless of whether it is the direct or indirect object. However, if both objects are nouns, the indirect object is first.
