      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use verbs with prepositions, in the context of a school exchange.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. At the end of a word, [-ig] is pronounced as a soft [ch], as in 'richtig'. In Austria, it sounds like [k].
      2. Prepositions used with some verbs in German may not be the same as those used with the same verbs in English.
      3. Prepositions may change the form of the article that follows, as they are used with specific cases.
      4. Verbs with the preposition 'für' are always followed by the accusative. Verbs with 'vor' are followed by the dative.
      5. Verbs with the preposition 'auf' usually take the accusative. Verbs with 'an' are often followed by the dative.

      Keywords

      • [-ig] - pronounced as in 'richtig'

      • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

      Common misconception

The prepositions 'auf' and 'an' are always followed by the accusative case.

'Auf' and 'an' are followed by the accusative case when there is movement. They are followed by the dative case when a location is being described.

      Teacher tip

Task B4 could also be repeated with students' exchange partners, if possible.
