Key learning points

  1. To form a question in the perfect tense, swap the auxiliary verb 'haben' or 'sein' with the subject.
  2. To form a question in the future tense, swap the part of 'werden' with the subject. The infinitive stays at the end.
  3. In a conversation, you can usually use the question to start your answer. Change 2nd person language to 1st person.
  4. A well-developed response has at least three verb clauses.
  5. Extend your answers by using a different tense, a different subject, or opinions and reasons.

Keywords

  • Auxiliary verb - a form of 'haben' or 'sein' used to form the perfect tense, or a form of 'werden' used to form the future tense

  • Werden - verb meaning 'to become', used as auxiliary verb to form the future tense

  • 2nd person - language used to refer to ‘you’, singular or plural

Common misconception

Like in a role-play, I should keep answers short and concise in a conversation.

Conversation answers should be developed and extended with at least three verb clauses.

Brainstorming questions before tackling a conversation on a given theme is a step often missed out by students. If they do this regularly in class, it will also help them to anticipate possible questions in the speaking exam.
