Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Add the suffix -ung to a verb stem to form a feminine noun with equivalent meaning, e.g., 'lösen' - 'die Lösung'.
      2. Add suffix -er to a verb stem to form a male agent noun with equivalent meaning, e.g., 'übersetzen' - 'der Übersetzer'.
      3. Add the suffix -keit / -heit to adjectives to form feminine nouns meaning -ty or -ness, e.g., 'krank' - 'die Krankheit'.
      4. Add the suffix -chen or -lein to a noun to mean 'little'. These diminutive nouns are neuter and often gain an umlaut.
      5. Extend answers in conversation to 3 clauses by using a different tense, a different subject, or opinions and reasons.

      Keywords

      • Suffix - a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to change its meaning or how it is used

      Common misconception

Like in a role-play, pupils should keep their answers short and concise in a conversation.

Conversation answers should be developed and extended with at least three verb clauses.

      Teacher tip

Brainstorming questions before tackling a conversation on a given theme is a step often missed out by students. If they do this regularly in class, it will also help them to anticipate possible questions in the speaking exam.
