Key learning points

  1. Word order 1 is the standard word order: subject-verb-object. Use WO1 after conjunctions 'und', 'oder', 'aber', 'denn'.
  2. Word order 2 (inversion) is when subject and verb swap position so the verb is always the second idea in the sentence.
  3. Word order 3 (subordination) is when the verb is sent to the end of the clause. Use WO3 after some conjunctions.
  4. Use WO3 after: 'weil', 'obwohl', 'dass', 'wenn', 'ob', 'da', ‘bevor’, ‘als’, ‘nachdem’, ‘sobald’ and ‘falls’.
  5. When describing a photo, use the acronym PALM. It stands for People, Action, Location, Mood. Add your own opinions too.

Keywords

  • Word order one (WO1) - subject-verb-object; the standard word order in a German sentence

  • Word order two (WO2) - inverts the subject and verb in a sentence

  • Word order three (WO3) - after certain conjunctions, the verb is sent to the end of the sentence or clause

Common misconception

All conjunctions cause the verb to be sent to the end of the clause.

Subordinating conjunctions, such as 'weil', 'dass', 'ob' and 'obwohl' send the verb to the end of the clause. Coordinating conjunctions, such as 'und', 'aber', 'denn' and 'oder' are followed by word order 1 (standard subject-verb-object word order).
