      Freizeit: prepositions, da-compounds

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use prepositions with the accusative and dative to describe where people and things are and where they are going in the context of free time.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. The prepositions hinter, neben, unter, über, vor, zwischen and in are used with the accusative when there is movement.
      2. The prepositions hinter, neben, unter, über, vor, zwischen and in are used with the dative when there is no movement.
      3. 'Vor' can mean 'before', 'in front of' or 'ago'.
      4. Use da-compounds for inanimate nouns already mentioned. Use direct or indirect object pronouns for animate nouns.

      Keywords

      • Preposition - a word that is used before a noun, a noun phrase, or a pronoun, connecting it to another word

      • Accusative - case used for the direct object in a sentence, after most verbs and some prepositions

      • Dative - case used for the indirect object in a sentence and after a dative verb or preposition

      • Da-, dar- - prefix added to prepositions to avoid repetition of the noun

      Common misconception

All prepositions are followed by either the accusative or the dative.

The prepositions ‘hinter’, ‘neben’, ‘unter’, ‘über’, ‘vor’, ‘zwischen’ and ‘in’ are used with the accusative case when there is movement but the dative case when there is no movement.

      Teacher tip

The dual case prepositions (zwischen, über, unter, hinter, vor, neben) are required knowledge for Higher only. However, they are on the AQA Foundation tier list, whilst ‘vor’ is on the Edexcel list. The three Foundation dual case prepositions (an, auf, in) feature in another lesson in this unit.
