Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Angles that meet at a point can be identified in diagrams.
  2. Angles that make a straight line can be identified on a diagram.
  3. Vertically opposite angles can be identified on a diagram.

Keywords

  • Supplementary angles - Supplementary angles are a pair of angles that sum to 180°.

  • Conjugate angles - Conjugate angles are a pair of angles that sum to 360°.

Common misconception

In order for two angles to be supplementary, they must both lie about a point on a straight line.

For two angles to be supplementary, they must sum to 180°. They do not also need to both lie on a straight line.

Some students may mistakenly equate drawing a larger angle marker (an arc with a greater radius) with a larger angle. It is important to present angles in different ways: large angles labelled with small angle markers, and vice versa.
