Common misconception
A particular piece of Folk music is always played in eactly the same way.
Folk music is passed down via an oral tradition and is often interpreted differently. Melodies, harmonies and instrumentation may change over time and when played in different places.
Teacher tip
Find opportunities to listen to more examples of Egan’s Polka. The piece is also known as the Kerry Polka, or John Egan's. Ask pupils to notice differences and similarities between different performances.
