Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can use music technology tools to enhance my EDM remix.

Key learning points

  1. Remixes (and EDM generally) use a variety of music technology tools to create effects and enhance the music.
  2. Risers and volume automation are useful tools that help to create contrast and climax in EDM.
  3. EQ (equalization) allows you to radically alter the timbre of your recorded tracks to create variety and contrast.

Keywords

  • Riser - A riser is a electronic sound effect which creates a gradual build up of sound. This is often used to create a climax in EDM.

  • Dynamics - Dynamics means how loud or soft the music is

  • Volume automation - Volume automation is a DAW tool that allows you to gradually increase or decrease dynamics within a track.

  • Balance - Balance is the relative dynamic level of two tracks or instruments.

  • EQ - EQ stands for equalization, which is a process in which you can adjust the sound frequencies within a track or project.

Common misconception

Adjusting EQ and/or dynamics is always musically beneficial.

Encourage students to use the DAW tools sparingly and reinforce the point that these tools are effective but that it is possible to overuse them. The analogy of seasoning on a meal - too much can spoil the meal - can be an effective one to use.

Teacher tip

There is significant potential in this unit to extend the practical activities, allowing students to explore the tools in more depth. Where possible, facilitate opportunities for students to develop their remixes further using the skills developed in this unit.
