Why this why now

In this unit, pupils develop their understanding of drum grooves, electronic dance music and how to create variation in music within a repetitive structure, extending their understanding of the importance of unity and variety in music. They develop their understanding of composing pop-syle bass lines and the importance of the tonic. They learn about the impact of the musical features on the overall effect and continue to develop their ability to use a DAW creatively.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know how to record and sequence basic rhythmic patterns
  • Pupils know how that a bass line is based on the notes of a chord, particularly the root note
  • Pupils know timbre can be altered on a DAW and the musical impact of doing so
  • Pupils have experience improvising over a track
  • Pupils know what a syncopated rhythm is and how to identify one
  • Pupils are aware of the main features of pop music
  • Pupils are aware of semiquavers
  • Pupils know that the kick drum plays on beats 1 and 3 in typical drum beat and four to the floor in EDM.
  • Pupils know that the hi-hat often plays quavers throughout the bar
