Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can create a simple bhangra composition and can explain some of the ways that bhangra uses music technology.

Key learning points

  1. Bhangra uses music technology extensively, in common with other modern dance music.
  2. Sampling and looping are common in bhangra, as well as the use of effects including echo, delay and filters.
  3. Modern bhangra also commonly uses synthesisers.
  4. We can create a simple bhangra groove with chaal, a riff and a chord sequence with a simple bass line.

Keywords

  • Sampling - Sampling is the use of clips of pre-existing sound or music.

  • Synthesizer - A synthesizer is an electronic instrument that can create a wide variety of different timbres.

  • Chord sequence - A chord sequence is a pattern of chords, usually lasting for 4 or 8 bars.

Common misconception

Bhangra is a traditional style of music that doesn't use music technology extensively.

Modern bhangra uses many of the tools that are available to musicians now, including different applications of music technology. It uses these to enhance the music, while still having its roots embedded in the traditional features of Punjabi bhangra.

Teacher tip

Encourage pupils to explore different effects and technological tools on the DAW. They may wish to explore the use of compressors, limiters, distortion and delay as well as any other tools that the DAW provides beyond those used in this lesson.
