      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can throw overarm with control to help me win the game.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: an overarm throw requires stepping forwards with one foot, releasing the ball high and rotating the body.
      2. Move: throwing with accuracy using an overarm throw requires us to look at the target before releasing the ball.
      3. Think: when fielding, you are trying to stop the batting team from scoring points.
      4. Feel: not giving up when you miss a throw in a game shows good determination.
      5. Connect: trying your hardest to win but being supportive of your opposition within a game demonstrates fairness.

      Keywords

      • Accuracy - the ability to control where we throw an object

      • Fielding - a defensive position that is occupied while the other team are batting

      • Overarm throw - throwing a ball in which you stretch your arm over your shoulder

      Common misconception

Pupils hold onto the object too tightly and for too long, releasing it too late.

Highlight the importance of holding the object with a relaxed grip and releasing it high for greater distance.

      Teacher tip

Try to space the groups out as much as possible during cycle 2, to avoid pupils being hit by another group with the ball.

      Equipment

      1 beanbag per pupil, 1 ball between 6, 20+ hoops, 30+ cones.
