Snow and ice: contrast and mirroring
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can create a winter weather duet using contrast and mirroring.
Key learning points
- Move: using actions, space, dynamics and relationships together helps us to communicate an idea.
- Move: pupils can create and hold shapes with balance and control to communicate an idea.
- Think: imagination helps us to create actions that communicate snow and frost.
- Feel: trying lots of different ideas requires courage.
- Connect: taking turns when mirroring a partner requires fairness and cooperation.
Keywords
Mirroring - reflecting an action
Swirling - circular actions involving twisting, turning, spiralling
Spiky - having sharp points
Common misconception
The pupils will only use their arms to communicate swirling snow.
Whilst arms offer a range of possible responses to suggest snow, guiding pupils to less conventional ideas such as a hip or an ear, pupils will respond with a far wider range of actions, building flexibility, control and coordination.
Teacher tip
Describe what you see pupils doing to praise as well as prompt ideas. This can include the names of the actions, space, dynamic or relationship used as well as the skill demonstrated, e.g. excellent control holding that low, shape using your knees and elbows to make it look spiky.
Equipment
Additional material: poem and suggested music
