Storms: speed and force
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply a variety of dynamics (speed and force) to my actions.
Key learning points
- Move: using dynamics with actions by changing the speed and force, helps us to communicate the idea.
- Think: being able to understand the actions of others requires imagination.
- Feel: we demonstrate courage when we perform actions different to others in the group.
- Connect: sharing space with others without stopping them from performing their actions requires fairness.
Keywords
Speed - how fast or slow an action is performed
Force - how gentle or powerfully an action is performed
Dynamics - the combination of speed and force
Common misconception
Dynamics describes how fast an action is performed.
Dynamics involves both speed and force. Some words do mean speed, e.g. quick, whereas others only talk about force, e.g. strong. However some words might mean both, e.g. explosive would be both fast and strong.
Teacher tip
Playing music loudly only increases the overall volume in the room as pupils try to talk over it when planning their dances. This impacts negatively on the output by the pupils and is a safety consideration.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
