Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: performing a contrasting duet requires us to use different actions to our partner.
  2. Move: changing the size or level of an action helps to communicate our ideas when we perform.
  3. Think: imagination enables us to create actions to communicate ideas such as sunshine and rain.
  4. Feel: courage supports us to talk about or show our ideas and opinions.
  5. Connect: performing a contrasting action to our partner involves taking turns showing fairness.

Keywords

  • Level - the height of a shape or action

  • Size - how big or small something is

  • Contrast - how things are different from each other

Common misconception

A tall shape is only achieved by stretching both arms upwards.

Whilst stretching both arms upwards is an example of a tall shape, there are many others. These might include twists, tilts, balances etc. By encouraging the pupils beyond their initial response they will think more deeply and creatively.

Asking pupils to put effort into stretching can be counter-productive since this typically causes muscles to contract and shorten. It may help to encourage them to relax and describe the action as 'lengthening'.
