High, low, over and under
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can create ways to move and balance in high and low ways, over and under apparatus.
Key learning points
- Move: performing high quality movements and balances high, low, over, and under the apparatus requires control
- Think: using a variety of apparatus to create movements and balances requires imagination
- Think: reflecting on the quality of movements and balances will improve our creativity and ideas.
- Connect: empathy requires encouraging others to try different ideas on the apparatus.
- Feel: striving to reflect and improve our ideas shows self-belief.
Keywords
Over - to cross over the top of a location
Under - to travel below or underneath a location
Creative - to do something new or with imagination
Common misconception
Pupils only use crawling actions to move over or under the apparatus. When reflecting on others' practice, pupils only say whether they liked or disliked their movements.
Give pupils other ideas to perform under apparatus, such as balance, swing, or slide, and other ideas to perform over apparatus, such as sliding or balancing on top or jumping over. Encourage pupils to be specific when reflecting on others' actions.
Teacher tip
The equipment list is for example only. When pupils work in pairs, allow groups of 3 so no one is left out. Allow pupils to work with friends, unless this causes problems. Make a display poster showing arrows for the 4 actions in their 'clever caterpillar cycle' - high, low, over, and under.
Equipment
mats, benches, gymnastic tables, climbing frames or wall bars

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
