Link two movements together
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can link two movements together and apply quality gymnastics to the performance.
Key learning points
- Move: linking skills together requires performing one action after another without stopping and with control.
- Think: choosing the best two movements to link together requires effective reflection and evaluation.
- Connect: listening to feedback, watching others perform and suggesting ways to improve shows empathy.
- Feel: striving to improve our skills through practice shows self-belief and a commitment to the best performance.
Keywords
Linking - successfully adding two movements together so that they flow one after the other
Performance - a display of your very best gymnastic skills
Quality - the good parts of the performance that suggest the movements and balances are performed correctly
Common misconception
Peer feedback refers to liking jumps rather than the quality of skills. Pupils only practice one combination of skills. Pupils think they will be judged negatively in their performance.
Model good feedback, referring to the quality of skills. Encourage pupils to move around the apparatus trying a range of combinations. Encourage pupils to ensure this is a positive experience for all and that they should talk kindly to one another.
Teacher tip
The apparatus list is for guidance only. Use whatever you have available and whatever you have time to prepare. Play music throughout the performances. This creates a good atmosphere and ensures anxious pupils don't feel the spotlight is on them because it is too quiet.
Equipment
mats, benches, gymnastic tables, climbing frames/wall bars

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
