Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: linking quality movements on a zigzag pathway, on apparatus, requires control, pointed fingers and toes and flow.
  2. Think: using apparatus to move along, over, under, through to create a zigzag pathway sequence, requires imagination.
  3. Connect: considering others’ feelings and needs when safely sharing the apparatus demonstrates excellent empathy
  4. Feel: courage enables us to be brave when trying out new ideas and developing quality actions while using the apparatus.

Keywords

  • Quality - movements and balances that are performed correctly

  • Pathway - the route (path) from one place to another

  • Apparatus - equipment made for a particular task

Common misconception

Pupils do not perform quality actions because they don't point their toes. They either pull their toes towards their body, so their ankle is 90 degrees, or their foot is in a relaxed position.

Some pupils will need to be taught how to point their toes. Remind them to push their feet away, making their legs look longer. Practice with everyone at the beginning of the lesson.

To help you plan your year 2 physical education lesson on: Zigzag pathways on apparatus, download all teaching resources for free and adapt to suit your pupils' needs...

The apparatus is for example only, use whatever is available to you. Including ladders or bars would enhance the learning to include hanging balances and monkey bars. Encourage pupils to 'stand like a gymnast' when you are talking to them, and at the start and end of any actions they perform.
