Dodging
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can dodge effectively and move into space to avoid defenders.
Key learning points
- Move: to dodge effectively we bend our knee, plant one foot on the floor, lean to one side and move the other way.
- Move: dodging effectively to avoid defenders requires you to have your head up to look for space.
- Think: concentrating on using the correct dodging technique at the right time will help you keep away from defenders.
- Feel: trying lots of different ways to dodge demonstrates self-belief.
- Connect: playing by the rules demonstrates fairness and empathy to others.
Keywords
Dodging - to avoid something by moving quickly to the side or changing direction
Defenders - individuals who are trying to stop the attackers from scoring
Space - an open area where there are no defenders
Common misconception
Pupils might think that performing one dodge will always be successful.
Pupils should remember that the defender will respond to the dodge. Pupils might need to dodge again if the defender guesses which way they will dodge and block their run into space or another defender might move into the space they are running to.
Teacher tip
Remind pupils that persistence and perseverance are just as important as physical ability when dodging away from a defender. Praise pupils who keep trying and don't give up. When pupils are collecting beanbags, there is a risk of head clashes. Provide more beanbags than pupils to reduce the risk.
