Dodging in competitive games
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can decide when and where to dodge and understand why dodging is important when playing competitive games.
Key learning points
- Move: being ready to react, keeping our head up and moving with a low position enables us to dodge effectively.
- Think: making effective decisions about when to attack and defend as a team requires concentration.
- Feel: demonstrating honesty throughout the game shows a strong understanding of all the rules.
- Connect: playing fairly within our own team and against the opposition will enable everyone to engage in the game.
Keywords
Team - a group of people who work together with the objective of achieving the same a goal
Game - an activity or sport in which people compete with each other according to agreed rules
Competitive - wanting to be the best or win in a game
Common misconception
Some pupils could think that competitive games are only about scoring points and will focus on this role in a team.
Competitive games require attacking and defensive skills as well as team work, listening, communication, decision making, honesty, self-belief and more.
Teacher tip
As pupils play these games, encourage teams to take time to discuss and agree tactics for dodging. Reward teams who work together to try a different tactic, even if it is not successful the first time. Celebrate pupils who encourage their teammates, even if the tactic doesn't always work.
